April 19,2009 - We Need Your Help to Fight Rare Eye Cancer

The Geezer Hockey League, Inc., in conjunction with the event founder and organizer, Joe Tonelli, will be sponsoring the "Fathers of Time Charity Ice Hockey Tournament", May 1-3, at the Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem, PA. For the past three years the Fathers of Time has been the Lehigh Valley's premier adult (over 35) charity tournament raising money to help members of the community stricken with serious and disabling diseases. Twenty-eight teams from near and far will compete in seven divisions based on hockey skill level (A, B, C and D) and skater age (over 50 and over 60 divisions).

All monies raised through the Fathers of Time Tournament will be donated to a Bethlehem resident that has been diagnosed with choroidal melanoma, a very rare eye cancer. While undergoing initial treatment for the choroidal melanoma, genetic testing indicated a very high risk for metastasis within the next three years. Not only is the recipient fighting a known battle with the choroidal melanoma, but is also trying to prevent its spreading throughout the entire body.

Since this cancer is so rare, much of the treatment is considered experimental and not covered through insurance, so treatments are limited to what is affordable. It is our goal to help raise money so that she can receive treatment that otherwise may have been unaffordable and can make a difference in her fight against this disease.

To learn more about this disease go to www.eyecancerinfo.com and follow the link to www.malignantmelanomainfo.com.

"We have all been blessed to be able to continue to play hockey as we get older and this is a way we can give back to our community", Tonelli said. "We care very deeply about this opportunity to raise money for a member of our community during her time of need."

Donations can be made directly through PayPal:

In addition, we are seeking items to be donated for an auction that will be take place during the tournament. For information about this event or sponsorship information please contact Scott Grossman at 610-739-8198 or Maria Poloni at 610-417-8695.

March 08,2009 - Introducing the Improved Geezer Hockey League Website!
After the combination of T1 and T2, the newly formed GHL Inc. assembled a development team in December 2008 to give the league a whole new look. Some added functionality you'll notice right away is the 'Log on' and 'League Registration' features.* Becoming a member of the site will give you access to the registration pages that utilize PayPal®, a system most of you are already familiar with.** Online registration will be a big asset to the league. Also notice the most important data right up front so the casual user can get game info without wasting time navigating web pages. The drop down menu's will provide the extended detail you're used to. Have a look around and enjoy your stay. Feedback is always encouraged.

The Spring 2009 GHL Season starts Sunday, April 5. Evaluations, which are required for all new skaters or for any skaters that are considering changing divisions, will be held on Sunday, March 29. The season will consist of 8 regular season games followed by 2 rounds of playoffs.

There will be a discounted registration fee of $230 for skaters that are signed up by March 22 after which the fee will increase to $255. Registration deadline is March 29 (evaluation night). Any registrations received after this will be accepted only on a space available basis.

*Be certain the information you input will be used strictly for GHL purposes and never distributed to any third party organizations.
**All transactions are done on the secure PayPal® website for your protection.

Jan 12,2009 - From The President
I would like to thank everyone for their involvement and support of the GHL T1 and T2 over the years. As many of you know, the GHL started in the Spring of 2004 with three teams. This start was due to the hard work of founders Tom Egan & Bruce McIntosh and first year players like Tom Martin, Brad Cramer, Jim Cain, Rick Amadeo, Fred Gilmartin, Ed Stenborg and many others. Since then, the organization and friendships have grown tremendously. In response to that growth, GHL expanded to two leagues, T1 and T2. Through the leadership of Maria Poloni, the oversight of the T2 Board and the support of T1 players, the T2 group also flourished following the same model that made T1 so successful and popular. This season, due largely to Jason Fritzinger's tireless efforts, we have 16 teams with roughly 215 skaters between the two leagues! Our continued success is assured by the skaters who return season after season helping to promote the league and recruit new skaters.

Throughout this time the GHL was managed by The Steel Ice Center. Over the years the rink has undergone several changes in personnel and, as a result, the GHL boards have assumed more responsibility for the league. In many ways this shift has been very positive, allowing us to keep the league following the model that our founders envisioned.

After the start of the 2008/2009 season, SIC management felt the way the league was run (through a single GHL liaison with independent T1 and T2 boards) was no longer ideal. The GHL boards were given a couple of options by SIC, but the most sensible for us, was the formation of a private league. Immediately both Boards began working together to form a private league to operate in a manner that would best suit the needs of our GHL constituents. We considered managing the league ourselves or going to an outside group. After significant discussion and consideration, we decided to manage the GHL ourselves. Our first step was to establish a non-profit entity(501c7)called Geezer Hockey League, Inc. This new entity is now in place and is managed by a single Board of Directors made up of GHL volunteers.

Beginning in Spring 2009, we will control the league with a strong commitment to continue with the same spirit that has made this organization so successful. One of the first initiatives you will see is the development of a single website representing both GHL divisions. We will announce other improvements over the coming months. As always, keeping the ice cost as low as possible will continue to be a high priority in an effort to attract as many players as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me or any of the people listed below.

Thank you again!
